Alfred Austin (1835–1913) was a writer and poet. He wrote for many years for the tory paper The Standard, and held the position of Poet Laureate from 1896 until his death in 1913. The Garden that I Love was one of his most popular works.
Austin published regularly for half a century and succeeded Alfred, Lord Tennyson as poet laureate of England in 1896. Nonetheless, he carries the reputation of having been the worst and least read English poet. Austin was born on May 30, 1835, in Headingley, near Leeds, to Roman Catholic parents Joseph and Mary Austin.
