It is said that Alexandra looked so much like her fiancé’s sister, Grand Duchess Aleksandra Nikolaevna, who died in childbirth, that her future mother-in-law burst into tears when they first met. In February 1848, Alexandra converted to Russian Orthodoxy, taking the name Grand Duchess Alexandra Iosifovna.

Alexandra est née le 8 juillet 1830 à Altenbourg 1. Elle est l'aînée des six filles de Joseph de Saxe-Altenbourg et de son épouse Amélie de Wurtemberg. En 1834, son père devient duc de Saxe-Altenbourg, mais il est forcé d'abdiquer lors de la révolution de 1848 en raison de ses positions conservatrices 2 .
