Alderley Edge is 6 miles (10 km) northwest of Macclesfield and 12 miles (19 km) south of Manchester, at the base of a steep and thickly wooded sandstone escarpment, Alderley Edge, which is the area's chief topographical feature and overlooks the Cheshire Plain.

There has been mining activity at Alderley Edge for over 4,000 years, from early in the Bronze Age right through to the early 20th century. Various prehistoric tools such as stone hammers and mauls have been found and in the 1870s an oak shovel was discovered.
