I compare the film with 8mm a lot because it feels like an exploration of what is the "niche" content that people are invested it, and a Serbian film expertly digressed what niche interest can look like.
Salo is the shock art that people pretend a serbian film is. I feel like the only person who will defend a Serbian film by admitting that it is purely shock for shock’s sake. Salo feels like it explores relationships of power more than it feels like a shock movie. The things that happen in the movie are shocking.

24 de dez. de 2023 · I also just like the shitstorm it causes whenever someone shows support for it, even (or especially) in the extreme cinema crowd. A Serbian Film was one of the first disturbing movies I ever watched. It was quite a while ago so my memory is quite hazy on it, but certain scenes have stuck in my mind.
Watch the film because your curiosity won’t be satiated unless you do. But make absolutely no bones about it. This film has a ludicrous plot which isn’t absolved by the acting, the dialogue, the lighting, the score, the plot, the “message”, the styling, the shots, the sets, or the SFX. Salo paved the way for films like Cannibal Holocaust and the entire generation of extreme horror films that came after.

Serbian film is all over the place. Obviously a film like this is going to cause controversy because it does touch upon extremely taboo subjects and the film has to put in a lot of legwork to justify. Unfortunately, this film isn't good enough to even begin that conversation.

A Serbian Film is all about shock horror and driving the literal metaphor as far out as possible without really having all that much depth to it in the end. Irreversible will teach you some shit about destruction of the human soul and ego driven revenge.
