North Carolina was one of only three states to create an all-Black regiment commanded by Black officers. Across the U.S., the Black press praised the state and its Third Regiment. But many whites in North Carolina were unhappy with it.
The 3rd North Carolina Regiment was organized April 15, 1776 at Wilmington. It included eight companies from Halifax, Edenton, and Hillsborough Districts. On February 5, 1777, it was reassigned to the Northern Department. On July 8, 1777, it was assigned to the NC Brigade, an element of the Northern Department.
