Nos anos de 1660 e 1661 ocorreu no Brasil a chamada Revolta da Cachaça, também conhecida como Revolta do Barbalho ou Bernarda. O principal motivo dessa revolta foi o aumento de impostos cobrados em cima da cachaça pela metrópole portuguesa.
