Abstract. THROUGHOUT the 1940s, J. Arthur Rank had been seen as the saviour of the British film industry. But by the start of 1950s he was in deep financial trouble. This was partly due to his financial over-commitments, but also partly due to Dalton’s ill-fated attempt to impose an ad valorem tax on American films.
