Launde Abbey in Leicestershire was to become the main family estate. It is a manor house built on the site of an Augustinian Priory founded in 1119. Thomas Cromwell had bought Launde Abbey for £1500 but did not live to take up residence.
History of Launde Abbey. Launde Abbey was founded as an Augustinian priory in 1119 by Richard Basset, a royal official of Henry I. During the first century of its life the community buildings, cloister and garth were built, including an imposing church of which one side chapel still survives, now used as the Chapel at the present-day Abbey.
The Clerke Baronetcy, of Launde Abbey in the County of Leicester, was created in the Baronetage of England on 18 June 1661 for Clement Clerke, an entrepreneur and Gentleman of the Privy Chamber. He was a descendant of Robert Clerke, brother of Sir John Clerke (died 1539), ancestor of the Clerke baronets of Hitcham.
