BBC Two or (previously) BBC2 is a British free-to-air public broadcast television channel owned and operated by the BBC. It covers a wide range of subject matter, with a remit "to broadcast programmes of depth and substance" in contrast to the more mainstream and popular BBC One.
The designation of the new channel as BBC2 is also announced. BBC TV was split into BBC1 and BBC2 in 1964 with the new channel, BBC2, having a remit to provide more niche programming. The channel was due to launch on 20 April 1964, but this was postponed after a fire at Battersea Power Station resulted in most of west London, including Television Centre, losing power.
