Sibelius is widely known for his symphonies and his tone poems, especially Finlandia and the Karelia suite. His reputation in Finland grew in the 1890s with the choral symphony Kullervo , which like many subsequent pieces drew on the epic poem Kalevala .

Karelia Suite, Op. 11 is a subset of pieces from the longer Karelia Music (named after the region of Karelia) written by Jean Sibelius in 1893 for the Viipuri Students' Association and premiered, with Sibelius conducting, at the Imperial Alexander University in Helsinki, Grand Duchy of Finland, on 23 November of that year.
They were staging a historical tableau, and, from the music, Sibelius salvaged three pieces to form an orchestral suite. In the 1990s, a Finnish composer and academic reconstructed more music, which, when recorded, brought the Karelia Suite to eleven movements.
