Several species of Asian box turtles were formerly classified in the family; however, revised taxonomy has separated them to a different family ( Geoemydidae ). As currently defined, the Emydidae are entirely a Western Hemisphere family, with the exception of two species of pond turtle .

Geoemydidae é uma família de tartarugas contendo aproximadamente 75 espécies conhecidas, que podem variar de 10 a 80 centímetros no comprimento e são encontradas nas regiões tropicais e subtropicais da Eurásia e norte da África. Existe apenas um gênero (Rhinoclemmys) encontrado na América do Sul.
Geoemyda is a genus of freshwater turtles in the family Geoemydidae (formerly Bataguridae). It contains two species: [1] Ryukyu black-breasted leaf turtle, Geoemyda japonica. Black-breasted leaf turtle, Geoemyda spengleri.
Emydidae é uma das famílias das tartarugas. A espécie mais conhecida no Brasil é a tartaruga-tigre-de-água. Em Portugal, o emidídeo mais comum é o cágado-mediterrânico . Nesta família estão as tartarugas que vivem quase exclusivamente na água.
