Das Burgtheater in Wien ist ein österreichisches Bundestheater. Es gilt als eine der bedeutendsten Bühnen Europas und ist nach der Comédie-Française das zweitälteste europäische sowie das größte deutschsprachige Sprechtheater. Das alte Burgtheater befand sich ab 1748 am Michaelerplatz.

The Burgtheater traces its roots back to 1741, when an enterprising entrepreneur sought permission to convert a disused building on the Michaelerplatz (close to the imperial court) into a stage. Despite the initial blessing of Empress Maria Theresa, the new theatre struggled to establish itself.
Burgtheater, Vienna, Europe. In 1776, when Joseph II declared that the theatre we know today as the Burgtheater would be renamed Teutsches Nationaltheater, this marked the beginning of its German-language focus.
