Marion is a city in and the county seat of Marion County, South Carolina, United States. It is named for Francis Marion, a brigadier general from South Carolina in the American Revolutionary War. The population was 6,939 at the 2010 census.

Marion, county, eastern South Carolina, U.S. It is situated between the Little and Great Pee Dee rivers to the east and west, respectively; the rivers join at the county’s southern tip. The county lies within the Coastal Plain and features generally flat terrain. Prior to European settlement the Pedee Indians lived in the forests and swamps.

8 de jun. de 2016 · Originally named Gilesborough in honor of local war hero Colonel Hugh Giles, by 1826 the town was being called Marion after General Francis Marion and the surrounding district. The name became official in 1847 when the town was incorporated.
