The county was created in 1800 and later organized in 1803. Erie County comprises the Erie–Meadville combined statistical area.

History of Erie County. Erie County derives its name from the Eriez Indians, who settled on the fertile lake shore. In the mid 1600s, the Eriez tribe was conquered and destroyed by the Iroquois Confederacy.
