Carlos era amigo íntimo de Henrique VIII, sendo casado com a irmã do rei, Maria Tudor, rainha consorte viúva da França.

He was a prominent courtier during his reign. His father, William Brandon, died fighting for Henry Tudor (later King Henry VII) in 1485.

Brandons father, Sir William Brandon, was standard bearer for Henry Tudor at the Battle of Bosworth Field – and is thought to have been killed by King Richard III on 22nd August, 1485.
