Blackheath Football Club is a rugby union club based in Well Hall, Eltham, in south-east London. The club was founded in Blackheath in 1858 and is the fourth-oldest rugby club in continuous existence in the world, after Dublin University Football Club (1854), Liverpool St Helens F.C. (1857), and Edinburgh Academical Football Club (1857).
Blackheath is the oldest independent Rugby club, meaning that it was not attached to any institution such as a military establishment, hospital, school or college. There were a number of institutional sides that are older than Blackheath and it was they who provided the Club’s opposition.

But it is Blackheath Rugby Club that has become known as ‘The Club’. Formed in 1858 as Old Blackheathens, it became the first ‘open’ club in the world four years later – ‘open’ in that membership was open to all, not just old school boys from Blackheath Proprietary School.
Our clubs met for the first time during the 2019-20 season and Blackheath completed a double with a 22-17 home success before a 31-18 victory at Old Bath Road. Club made it three in a row as they triumphed 17-13 at OBR in December 2021, Rams posting a first success with a 29-17 win at Well Hall in April 2022.
