Adam Duritz, formador da banda The Himalayans, e o produtor e guitarrista David Bryson formaram o Counting Crows em São Francisco em 1991. No começo, tratava-se de um duo acústico. O guitarrista David Immerglück também tocava com eles na época, mesmo não sendo um membro oficial do grupo.
