17 de jun. de 2011 · Hi, Nesta situação a frase correta seria a primeira; I was eating when he arrived. I was eating = o que estava fazendo quando ele chegou, no momento que ele chegou. I had been eating = o que estava fazendo algum tempo antes que ele chegou, e não na mesma hora que ele chegou. A segund frase seria melhor como: I had been eating before he arrived.

Not even in portuguese it would be used this way. Use "was". It's better. The author stayed here to autograph the book.
