While not as well known as his brother, the elephant-headed god Ganesha, Karttikeya is popular throughout South Asia, especially in the Tamil-speaking south, where he is known as Murugan.

Though the Vedic gods are still depicted as mighty and worthy of respect, they have been overshadowed by newer gods.
