Going from d20 to 3d6 would take some of the drama out of rolling. Everyone is always watching to see if a natural 20 or 1 is rolled -- ready to join the chorus of cheers or groans. If the d20 were replaced, then I think a normal curve is too low. The average people wave from shops and fields as the adventurer marches off to slay the foes.

If you need to roll a d20, shuffle the following 20 cards and draw one: Ace of Hearts (1) 2-10 of Hearts (2-10) Ace of Spades (11) 2-10 of Spades (12-20) Essentially the hearts are the face value, and the spades are face value +10. D&D 5e returned to use of a revised version of the OGL, and there are both an official OGL licensed SRD and third-party OGL licensed content based on said SRD. 5e does not of course use the term d20 System, but that's got nothing to do with licensing, it's simply because 5e does not use the d20 System. \$\endgroup\$

Yes, d2, d3, d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, and d20 have uniform distributions. Of these, the d4, d6, d8, d12, and d20 are regular polyhedrons. The d2 and d10 are not regular polyhedrons, but each face is nonetheless equally-likely. I feel like this answer is incomplete; it seems to state an answer without much justification.
