I've seen a lot of arguments about why he killed everyone except his mother, such as "he wanted to punish her the most" or "he loved her." I thought of one I haven't seen before, and I think it's a good explanation.

The lack of communication between Eva, Kevin, the dad and therapists ultimately culminated into how Kevin turned out, not to mention, quite literally genetics does play big part, Kevin parallels Eva which is shown throughout the movie .

He's a baby in a cot, it's easy to see how an exhausted mother, who's possibly suffering post natal depression can interpret malevolent devilry from a child laughing in a cot.

It may have been bad advice, but Kevin truly wants to get Steven and Connie back together, even if he had selfish motives. Kevin has never been vulnerable since we’ve known him, except when he mentions Sabina.

Movies like We Need to Talk About Kevin provide us with the opportunity to look at, absorb, and discuss these dark, dirty, and depressing aspects of humanity in a safe n controlled setting that doesn't have the weight of actual human death behind it.   9. In the book, there was the nanny from Ireland who seemed to be pretty solid but by the time she quit she just couldn’t take dealing with baby/toddler Kevin anymore. Of course, he’s not an evil baby but he seems to suffer from some disorder and realistically be an unusually difficult baby.

Considering how much of a cold unfeeling monster of a child Kevin was (Celia also had Eva as a mother and did just fine), Eva was a saint for putting up with him as she did.
