16 de jun. de 2023 · I know there are lots of examples where you can find "shame on me", including a proverb. However, I remember how a few teachers (not only ESL teachers from my country but also the native speakers) mentioned that one can say "shame on you" but not "shame on me". I even remember the phrase "shame works with you but not with me".
(1) It's a shame we can't take them home with us. (2) It's a shame that you haven't read this book. In such situations, speakers definitely don't mean "a condition of humiliating disgrace or disrepute" by "shame". But for many non-native English speakers, it still sounds rude and offensive to listeners.
1. In my experience, this is a fairly friendly phrase roughly equivalent to "That's too bad" or "I'm sorry to hear that." It doesn't have anything to do with either conversationalist feeling shame. Person A: "I wanted to take my mom out for dinner yesterday, but there was too much snow." Person B: " That's a shame.
28 de abr. de 2024 · It could be understood to have developed from the sense "Reproach incurred or suffered; dishonour; ignominy; derision" (wiktionary) and the "full sentence" would be "There is shame on you". But a native speaker would not think of "Shame on you" as being the shortened form of anything, but a complete idiom. Shame is a noun in this idiom.

For example, can I say "It is a shame that our ball missed the target by a tiny distance! We almost scored!" or "It is a pity that our ball missed the target by a tiny distance!

11 de nov. de 2020 · You can hang your head in shame or embarrassment - in fact, the dictionary definition of "hang head" says precisely that. When you say "without a change in meaning", obviously there is a difference between shame and embarrassment - a dictionary will tell you that.
