The Allotment, watercolour on Bockingford HP paper, 140lb (300gsm), (30.5x40.5cm) Finally, I painted the distant sheds in a very simple fashion using pale tones – applying the paint then dabbing it with a cloth to lift key areas before they dried to create a slightly broken texture.

  7. Stage one. I first stretched my sheet of paper and while it was still wet, added a cobalt blue wash over most of the surface, leaving just a few untouched areas. I also loosely washed in a light mix of oranges, reds and gamboge – nothing too dark, just enough to give me a background to work on.

  8. 2. 1. Squint and find the darkest areas in your composition; these are the shadows made by the baubles. Mix diluted paint to block in those areas quickly. It is always good to keep your darks thin so they don’t feel too heavy to the eye and retain some transparency. Don’t paint all the shadows with the same colour.

  9. When trying to paint realistic seascapes I find it helpful to split them into three distinct areas, each of which requires a different treatment: 1. The background. This is the area nearest to, and including, the horizon, specifically where the sea meets the sky.
