5 de set. de 2023 · Mange is the name of a category of skin conditions caused by microscopic parasites called mites in humans and animals. While most commonly associated with dogs, humans can also contract mange, which typically results in scabies or demodicosis.
Demodicosis / ˌ d ɛ m ə d ə ˈ k oʊ s ɪ s /, also called Demodex folliculitis in humans [1] and demodectic mange (/ d ɛ m ə ˈ d ɛ k t ɪ k /) or red mange in animals, is caused by a sensitivity to and overpopulation of Demodex spp. as the host's immune system is unable to keep the mites under control.
Mange is caused by parasitic mites that affect the skin, mainly by making the skin very itchy. Mange is most common in dogs, but may affect cats, wildlife, and humans too. Typically, mange is contracted by contact with another animal who is infested, or a contaminated environment.
Mange in humans is not to be confused with the similar but different disease known as “scabies”, which is caused by Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis and is not contracted through contact with mangy wildlife.
