x86-64 (also known as x64, x86_64, AMD64, and Intel 64) is a 64-bit version of the x86 instruction set, first announced in 1999. It introduced two new modes of operation, 64-bit mode and compatibility mode, along with a new 4-level paging mode.
The native architecture of x86-64 processors: residing in the 64-bit Mode, lacks of access mode in segmentation, presenting 64-bit architectural-permit linear address space; an adapted IA-32 architecture residing in the Compatibility Mode alongside 64-bit Mode is provided to support most x86 applications

The updated instruction set is also grouped according to architecture (i386, i486, i686) and more generally is referred to as (32-bit) x86 and (64-bit) x86-64 (also known as AMD64). Original 8086/8088 instructions [ edit ]
x86-64 calling conventions. x86-64 calling conventions take advantage of the added register space to pass more arguments in registers. Also, the number of incompatible calling conventions has been reduced. There are two in common use. Microsoft x64 calling convention
x86 assembly language is the name for the family of assembly languages which provide some level of backward compatibility with CPUs back to the Intel 8008 microprocessor, which was launched in April 1972. [1] [2] It is used to produce object code for the x86 class of processors.
