The Cromwell family is an English aristocratic family descended from Hugh de Cromwell who came to England with William the Conqueror. Its most famous members are: Thomas Cromwell, 1st Earl of Essex; and, Oliver Cromwell, the Lord Protector.
Robert Cromwell (1560–1617) was an English politician who was the father of Oliver Cromwell. He represented Huntingdon in the English House of Commons. [1] He was a man of sober Puritanism. He was married to a woman named Elizabeth Cromwell.
Cromwell was born in Huntingdon on 25 April 1599 to Robert Cromwell and his second wife Elizabeth, daughter of William Steward.
Sir Henry’s second son was Robert Cromwell, who married Elizabeth Steward around 1590. The couple had ten children, three boys and seven girls. Only one of the boys survived infancy – Oliver Cromwell, who was born in Huntingdon on 25 th April 1599. We know relatively little about Oliver’s early life.

Robert Cromwell (d 1617) was one of the younger sons of Sir Henry; he married Elizabeth, daughter of William Steward (d 1594). Robert Cromwell and Elizabeth had ten children (three sons and seven daughters).
Lord Protector. Probably the most important phase in Cromwell’s life was his appointment in 1653 as Lord Protector, the first person who was not a member of the Royal Family to be a head of state in Britain.
