In 1827, Liverpool was forced to stand down as Prime Minister after suffering a severe stroke. He died the following year. Canning, as Liverpool's right-hand man, was chosen by George IV to succeed him, in preference to the Duke of Wellington or Sir Robert Peel. [57]

George Canning, (born April 11, 1770, London, Eng.—died Aug. 8, 1827, Chiswick, near London), British politician. As a young man, he came under the influence of William Pitt, who helped him win a seat in Parliament (1793) and a post as undersecretary for foreign affairs (1796–99).
Há 1 dia · The most brilliant disciple of the younger Pitt, Canning was distrusted as an intriguer. He also suffered from the fact that his father had died in penury and that his mother had been an actress. Rescued by a wealthy uncle, Canning was educated at Eton and Oxford.
But Canning’s health had not recovered from the chill he had caught in January, and on 8 August he died. Canning was Prime Minister for 119 days (the shortest until 2022) and was too brief to make any contribution to the office or to wider government policy.
