Be amazed by the glittering interiors of the grandest address in the capital, once known as 'Number 1 London'. This beautiful Georgian building was the London home of the first Duke of Wellington and has changed very little since his great victory at Waterloo in 1815.

The house was originally built in red brick by Robert Adam between 1771 and 1778 for Lord Apsley, the Lord Chancellor, who gave the house its name. Some Adam interiors survive: the Piccadilly Drawing Room with its apsidal end and Adam fireplace, and the Portico Room, behind the giant Corinthian portico added by Wellington.

Há 2 dias · Although Apsley’s interiors were extensively altered by Wyatt, elements of Robert Adam’s decorative schemes can still be seen in the original, eastern part of the house. Elaborate plaster ceilings and friezes survive in the Piccadilly Drawing Room and the Portico Drawing Room.

A unique survival of an aristocratic home in central London. Orginally built by Robert Adam and extensively remodelled in the 1820s for the Duke of Wellington.
