John Howard, born about 1425, was the son of Sir Robert Howard (1398–1436) of Tendring Hall, Stoke-by-Nayland, Suffolk by his wife Margaret de Mowbray (1391–1459), eldest daughter of Thomas de Mowbray, 1st Duke of Norfolk (of the first creation) (1366–1399), by wife Elizabeth FitzAlan (1366–1425).
In 1397, it was given to Thomas Mowbray, 1st Duke of Norfolk, by King Richard II. And when the Mowbray line became extinct, it passed eventually to the Howard family. Major repairs to this castle were carried out in 1485 by John Howard, 1st Duke of Norfolk (second creation).
Thomas Mowbray, 1st duke of Norfolk was an English lord whose quarrel with Henry of Bolingbroke, Duke of Hereford (later King Henry IV, reigned 1399–1413), was a critical episode in the events leading to the overthrow of King Richard II (reigned 1377–99) by Bolingbroke.

Thomas Mowbray, K.G., 1st Earl of Nottingham, 1st Duke of Norfolk, Lord Mowbray and Seagrave, Earl Marshall of England, was the younger son of John de Mowbray, Knt., 4th Lord Mowbray, and Elizabeth de Segrave, suo jure Lady Seagrave. He was born 22 March 1366/7 or 1367/8 (aged 33 in 1399).
