Bloemfontein is located in central South Africa on the southern edge of the Highveld at an elevation of 1,400 metres (4,600 ft), bordering on the semi-arid region of the Karoo. The area is generally flat with occasional hills ("koppies" in Afrikaans), and the general vegetation is Highveld grassland.
The city lies on a high plateau at an elevation of 4,568 feet (1,392 m). Spacious and sprawling over hills and kopjes (hillocks), Bloemfontein (“Fountain of Flowers”) is known for its natural and manmade beauties, including the 300-acre (120-hectare) King’s Park and the Franklin Game Reserve on Naval Hill.
