The novella follows a frontline deserter (Andrei) and his wife (Nastyona) through the trials and tribulations of harboring a wanted criminal during the harsh Siberian winter.

  7. Live and Remember (Zhivi i pomni) is the only major work by Rasputin not set in the contemporary period. It does lay claim, however, to be the most tense and dramatically involving of all his writings, and the only one not driven by his own social and environmental agenda, even though it has clear affinities and links with his other writings.
