The Federal Charter or Letter of Alliance (German: Bundesbrief) is one of the earliest constitutional documents of Switzerland. A treaty of alliance from 1291 between the cantons of Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden, the Charter is one of a series of alliances from which the Old Swiss Confederacy emerged.

The Federal Charter of 1291. The Federal Charter from early August 1291 is Switzerland's oldest constitutional document. In this ancient pact, the valley communities of Central Switzerland, Uri, Schwyz and Nidwalden pledged to help each other resist any threat of violence or injustice.
After the establishment of the federal state, the Rütli oath became associated with the Swiss Federal Charter, a document dated to 1291. This choice was not straightforward, as it went against Tschudi's date of 1307, and historians could [ clarification needed ] enumerate a total of 82 similar documents of the period of 1251 to 1386.
The Federal Charter of 1291 first assumed great importance in a report by the Federal Department of Home Affairs of 21 November 1889, suggesting a celebration in Bern in 1891 that would combine the city's 700th anniversary with the Confederacy's 600th anniversary.

History. The Museum of the Swiss Charters of Confederation (up to 1992: the Federal Charter Archive) was built in 1936 primarily to house a single object: the Federal Charter of 1291. At the time, this pact was believed to be the founding document of the Swiss Confederation and revered much like a national shrine in its purpose-built building.
