Yegor Gaidar was a Soviet and Russian economist, politician, and author, and the architect of the shock therapy reforms in Russia after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. He was the Acting Prime Minister of Russia in 1992 and the First Vice-Premier under Chernomyrdin in 1993, and played a role in the constitutional crisis of 1993.

Dr. Gaidar was the founder and chairman of the Democratic Choice of Russia, a pro-market liberal party, and as such won elections to the first Russian Duma (Parliament) in 1993. Between 1992 and 1994, he also was counselor on economic policy to the Russian Federation president.
