On August 20, 2018, Michigan gubernatorial candidate Gretchen Whitmer (D) announced that she had selected Gilchrist to serve as her running mate. Gilchrist was elected as the lieutenant governor of Michiganon November 6, 2018. He assumed office on January 1, 2019.
