I would agree that he was startled awake sounds better (at least in BE). The OED gives some examples of startle as an intransitive verb, but I have never come across this use.

  10. 6 de jan. de 2023 · I agree that that use of waking implies waking up out of sleep. However, waking is valid as an adjective meaning awake. It just doesn’t seem to work in that sentence. It’s usually used attributively, as in someone’s “waking hours”, i.e. the part of each day during which they’re awake (Definition of ONE'S WAKING HOURS/MOMENTS).
