Emma Hardy died at Max Gate, the house she shared with Hardy near Dorchester on 27 November 1912 at the age of 72. On 26 November, she had felt unwell and allowed a doctor to visit but not to examine her.

Its probable basis is that a younger Farman girl did die, aged fifteen, three weeks before John Attersoll Gifford’s marriage. Emma Lavinia Gifford certainly appears, in the light of all this, as the spoilt child of a spoilt father.
Emma Gifford died a couple of years before the start of the First World War. Thomas Hardy was 72 years old. He married Florence Dugdale just two years later. With these biographical details in mind, reading the poignant verses collected in this book is a strange experience.

Sadly the marriage between Hardy and Emma turned sour but when she died 1912, Hardy, was full of remorse, wrote several poems in her memory. He returned to St Juliot the following year and he designed the memorial tablet to Emma on the north wall of the church, and had it made by a Boscastle stonemason.
