The revolutions of 1848, known in some countries as the springtime of the peoples or the springtime of nations, were a series of revolutions throughout Europe over the course of more than one year, from 1848 to 1849.
In 1848, a revolutionary wave shook the conservative order that had presided over the fate of Europe since the fall of Napoleon and the Congress of Vienna in 1815. Rebellions drove out sovereigns or forced them to grant a constitution, and established new regimes founded on national sovereignty and fundamental rights.
Revolutions of 1848, series of republican revolts against European monarchies, beginning in Sicily and spreading to France, Germany, Italy, and the Austrian Empire. They all ended in failure and repression and were followed by widespread disillusionment among liberals.
