This condition presents with exertional dyspnoea with or without pleuritic chest pain. It is rare, affecting approximately 1% of patients with SLE, and can occur at any point in the disease.

  3. INTRODUCTION: Shrinking lung syndrome (SLS) is a rare disease characterised by progressive dyspnea, elevation of the diaphragm, pleuritic chest pain, decreased lung volumes on imaging, and restrictive pattern seen on pulmonary function test (PFT).

In rare cases, SLE patients present a syndrome characterized by dyspnea, chest pain and abnormalities in pulmonary function testing, although there may be no evidence of major parenchymal lung disease on computerized tomography scans. This condition has come to be known as shrinking lung syndrome.
