The history of the National Hockey League begins with the end of its predecessor league, the National Hockey Association (NHA), in 1917.
The NHL fought the WHA for players, losing 67 to the new league in its first season of 1972–73, including the Chicago Black Hawks' Bobby Hull, who signed a ten-year, $2.5 million contract with the Winnipeg Jets, then the largest in hockey history.
