In the United States, federalism is the constitutional division of power between U.S. state governments and the federal government of the United States. Federalism (from the Latin foedus, meaning covenant) was the most feasible way for the people of the United States to create a continental-size democratic republic with a government strong enough to develop and protect the union without destroying the 13 constituent republics that preceded the union.
