Royal Standard of the Grand Duke of Hesse 1903–1918. This is a list of monarchs of Hesse (German: Hessen) during the history of Hesse on west-central Germany. These monarchs belonged to a dynasty collectively known as the House of Hesse and the House of Brabant, originally the Reginar.
Ernest Louis was the elder son of Louis IV, Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine and Princess Alice of the United Kingdom, daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. He was named Louis after his father.

Biografia. Luís nasceu em Darmestádio, a capital do Grão-Ducado de Hesse e do Reno, na Confederação Germânica. Foi o primeiro filho do príncipe Carlos de Hesse e do Reno (1809-1877) e da princesa Isabel da Prússia (1815-1885), neta do rei Frederico Guilherme II da Prússia.
