The author said she got the idea from a true story of a woman who gave birth in a Costco parking lot in Long Island. That woman was on the way to the hospital with her husband in a car and just didn't make it in time, but the news story palnted the seed of an idea in the author's mind.
Anne of Green Gables recounts the adventures of Anne Shirley, an 11-year-old orphan girl, who is mistakenly sent to two middle-aged siblings, Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, who had originally intended to adopt a boy to help them on their farm, Green Gables, in the fictional town of Avonlea in Prince Edward Island, Canada.
