Sir Walter Mildmay (bef. 1523 – 31 May 1589) was a statesman who served as Chancellor of the Exchequer to Queen Elizabeth I, and founded Emmanuel College, Cambridge . Origins.
Emmanuel College was founded by Sir Walter Mildmay in 1584 on the site of a former priory of the Dominican Order, also known as the Black Friars or Preachers. Mildmay had a long career of public service to his credit, and was for many years Chancellor of the Exchequer to Queen Elizabeth I.

Sir Walter Mildmay was the son of a Chelmsford shopkeeper and rose to power & fortune during the reign of Henry VIII. He was a classic example of the social mobility that flourished during the early sixteenth century. Sir Walter served as a trusted financial adviser to both Edward VI & Mary I.
Mildmay’s sympathy with puritanism combined with his reverence for the monarchy, his financial and administrative ability, and his quality as an orator, made him a leading Privy Councillor in the House of Commons.

As a picture of a living society a body of rules might well be thought no more than dry bones; but Mildmay's statutes have a deal more flesh on them than their modern counterparts.
Statesman; founder of Emmanuel College, Cambridge. Fourth son of Sir Thomas Mildmay of Moulsham, Essex. Educated at Christ College, Cambridge. Adopted the legal profession, and was appointed by Henry VIII one of the Surveyors-General of the Court of Augmentations.
