General Walter Bedell "Beetle" Smith (5 October 1895 – 9 August 1961) was a senior officer of the United States Army who served as General Dwight D. Eisenhower's chief of staff at Allied Forces Headquarters (AFHQ) during the Tunisia Campaign and the Allied invasion of Italy in 1943, during World War II.

When Germany surrendered, it was Walter Bedell Smith, representing the United States, who signed the surrender document. After the war, Smith held a variety of posts in the Truman administration, including Ambassador to the Soviet Union and Director of Central Intelligence.
Walter Bedell Smith suffered a heart attack on 9 August 1961 at his home in Washington, DC, and died in the ambulance on the way to Walter Reed Army Hospital. Although entitled to a Special Full Honor Funeral, at the request of his widow Mary Eleanor Smith, a simple joint service funeral was held, patterned after the one given to Marshall in 1959.
