Thomas Pelham-Holles, 1st duke of Newcastle (born July 21, 1693—died November 17, 1768, London, England) was the prime minister of Great Britain from 1754 to 1756 and from 1757 to 1762. Through his control of government patronage, he wielded enormous political influence during the reigns of Kings George I and George II.

Em maio de 1762, o incumbente governo whig comandado por lorde Thomas Pelham-Holles, 1.º Duque de Newcastle, foi substituído por um escocês liderado pelo tory lorde Bute. Os oponentes de Bute espalharam calúnias que ele estava tendo um caso com a mãe do rei, também explorando preconceitos anti-escoceses entre os ingleses. [32]
