The Decline of the West (German: Der Untergang des Abendlandes; more literally, The Downfall of the Occident) is a two-volume work by Oswald Spengler. The first volume, subtitled Form and Actuality, was published in the summer of 1918. The second volume, subtitled Perspectives of World History, was published in 1922.

In “Decline of the West” Spengler foresees megalopolises for tens of millions by the year 2000. And to enter a decline in Spengler’s thinking doesn’t mean an imminent collapse. Rome entered its decline when Caesarism dominated the Classical world. More than five centuries passed before the deathblow was struck.

Oswald Spengler’s 1918–22 best-seller The Decline of the West mourned the engulfing of Kultur by the cosmopolitan anthill of Zivilisation and argued that only a dictatorship could arrest the decline. Sociologist Max Weber hoped for charismatic leadership to overcome bureaucracy.
