Nangklao was the eldest surviving son of King Rama II. His mother Sri Sulalai was one of Rama II's secondary wives. Nangklao was likely designated as heir by his father. His accession was uncontested and smoothly confirmed by the grand council.

Born under the name of Prince Thap, then known as Nangklao, Rama III is the third king of the kingdom of Siam. It is part of the Chakri Dynasty, the current ruling dynasty of Thailand. His reign is characterized by unparalleled military power over the entire Indochinese peninsula and control, in fact, of Vietnam and Cambodia.
All kings in the current Chakri dynasty of Thailand are often referred to as King Rama in the English speaking world. The name Rama was adopted from the name of the Hindu God Rama, an avatar of Vishnu .
The statue of King Rama III features the King sitting on a throne. It is one and a half times life size. The two-level base is made of marble. The shape of the marble backdrop is a reference to the Thai traditional-style palace which was used as the royal emblem of the late King.
