  4. Maria of Montpellier was the daughter of William VIII, lord of Montpellier, and Eudocia of Byzantium, niece of the Byzantine emperor Manuel I Comnenus (r. 1143–1180). Born in 1181, Maria lost her birthright at the age of six when her father repudiated her mother in order to marry Agnes of Castile.
