A condition of the marriage was that the firstborn child, boy or girl, would succeed to the lordship of Montpellier on William's death.

Maria of Montpellier was the daughter of William VIII, lord of Montpellier, and Eudocia of Byzantium, niece of the Byzantine emperor Manuel I Comnenus (r. 1143–1180). Born in 1181, Maria lost her birthright at the age of six when her father repudiated her mother in order to marry Agnes of Castile.

[1] Era filla de Guilhèm VIII de Montpeller i d' Eudòxia Comnena de Constantinoble. [2] Matrimoni i descendents. ∞ 1194, vescomte Ramon Jofre «Barral», vescomte de Marsella, que morí el mateix any.
