  6. In 1920, she met Leonard Knight Elmhirst (1893–1974), an Englishman from a Yorkshire landowning family, who was then studying agriculture at Cornell University, and was seeking support for Cornell's Cosmopolitan Club which provided amenities for foreign students.

  7. Leonard Elmhirst was born in Yorkshire in 1893. He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge and later studied Agriculture at Cornell University, USA. When Rabindranath visited America in 1920-21, one of the few positive outcomes of this trip was his meeting with Elmhirst.
