John Percival (27 September 1834 – 3 December 1918) was the first headmaster of Clifton College, where he made his reputation as a great educator. In his 17 years at Clifton numbers rose to 680. He accepted the presidency of Trinity College, Oxford, to recover from his years at Clifton.

He became Bishop of Hereford in 1895 and was widowed the following year. He found working in a large rural diocese with very conservative views a struggle. However, together with other liberal clergymen, Bishop Percival expressed support for women’s suffrage in print and at meetings.

PERCIVAL, JOHN (1834–1918), schoolmaster and bishop, the son of William Percival, a Westmorland ‘statesman’ (that is, a farmer who owned his land), by his wife, Jane, daughter of William Langmire, of Bolton, Westmorland, was born at Brough Sowerby, Westmorland, 27 September 1834, and educated at Appleby grammar school.
